The GED is currently offered in English, Spanish, and French, so individuals who feel more comfortable taking the GED in Espanol can do so if they like. There is no difference in the content of the test; the only difference is the language the test is written in. If individuals do decide to take the GED test in Spanish, however, there are certain policies and regulations they need to be aware of.
Not all GED Testing Centers offer the GED test in Spanish, so it is important to check with the location before registering. If the Spanish version is not available, then the individual will be redirected to another testing center that does offer the Spanish GED exam.
Also, depending on the state, the Board of Education may require an individual taking the GED test in Spanish to all take an ESL (English as a second language) test to prove their abilities in English. Unlike the GED exam, the ESL test measures an individual’s ability to process information in English. For example, test takers may be asked to read a flier and answer questions about the flier’s content. About seventy-five percent of the ESL will be similar to those types of questions, and the remaining twenty-five percent will place more emphasis on interpreting passages and drawing conclusions based on context clues. For example, test takers may be asked to consider the intended audience or main idea of a passage.
Even if ESL test isn’t required by the State Board of Education, it is still extremely beneficial to take it anyways. If an individual passes the ESL test, then he or she has demonstrated their capability to exhibit a level of fluency in English that increases his or her of getting a job or being admitted into college. Especially in today’s world, being bilingual in both Spanish and English can give an individual potential access to a greater variety of jobs ranging from business to education.
Thus, just because people can take the GED in Spanish doesn’t mean they can ignore learning English. Passing the ESL test, regardless of whether it is mandatory or not, gives a person’s profile a big boost. These people may have more work cut out for them, but in the end the reward is much greater.
