What does GED stand for?

If you fail to earn a high school diploma, it isn’t the end of the world. Many people who find themselves in such a situation go on to earn a GED. Well, what is a GED? What does GED stand for? GED officially means General Education Development, but is also popularly known by names such as Graduate Equivalency Degree, General Education Diploma, or General Equivalency Diploma. The GED is a substitute for a traditional high school diploma, and is awarded upon the passing of a GED test.

The GED test contains five separate sections: math, social studies, science, reading, and writing. All sections of the GED test consist of multiple choice questions, except for the writing portion, which requires the test taker to write an essay. Based on the local policies, test takers may need to finish the whole exam in one sitting, while other locations may allow test takers to complete the exam over the course of several days. If someone were to complete the exam all at once, it would take approximately seven hours to finish.

For each section of the GED test, an individual can earn a minimum score of 200 and a maximum score of 800. In most cases, a minimum score of 410 is needed in all five sections, as well as a cumulative section average of 450, is required to pass the GED. Individuals are allowed a retake of the exam if they do not pass the first time around, although they are usually required to wait for some time. If you are planning to use the GED to apply to college, it is important to remember that some colleges may hold you to higher standards for the GED to count. For example, colleges may require you to obtain a score of at least 500 in each section for them to grant you admission based on the GED.

Even if you don’t plan to attend college, earning a GED is still tremendously helpful when applying to jobs. When employers see that a person has a GED, they recognize that the individual cares about his education since he put in the time and dedication to gain a proper academic background. Thus, when a person has a GED, they are qualified for a wider range of jobs, and have a much greater chance of securing a position compared to people who have no qualifications at all.
